Love to Live Well in partnership with A & M Agrilife Extension is on a mission to help Denton County Sale Down to a Healthier You by providing a low-cost group weight loss program tailored for a variety of audiences:

  • Scale Down to a Healthier You
    • For adults ages 18-65
    • 12 week program with 6 classes (each 1.5 hrs long)
  • Scale Down to Healthier Kids
    • For ages 6-12 and their parents
    • 6 week program with 3 classes (each 1 hr long)
  • Scale Down to Healthier Teens
    • For ages 13-17 and their parents
    • 6 week program with 3 classes (each 1 hr long)
  • Scale Down to a Healthier You Seniors
    • For adults ages 65+
    • 12 week program with 6 classes (each 1.5 hrs long)

Denton has lots of parks throughout the county. When was the last time you visited one?

Look for walkable spaces in your neighborhood or where you work. Or find another way to get moving and play wherever you are.

Free Tips to Get You Started on the Path to a Healthier You

  • Avoid second helpings
  • Watch your portions on the first helping
  • Eat your calories don’t drink them
  • Identify 1-2 foods that you know you have way too much and start cutting back on the frequency and portion of those I like to call the “low-hanging fruit” (i.e. if you are drinking 4 cokes a day, go to 3, then 2, etc.).
  • Make sure your “treat” hasn’t become a daily habit…for then it is no longer a treat.

Know Your Numbers and look beyond Body Mass Index (BMI) to body composition (% body fat, % lean muscle mass, etc.). If you do not know your body composition, I can measure that for you in one of my offices.

Focus on More Than the Scale

I recommend using multiple measures at the beginning of a weight loss program. Measure your height and weight for BMI.

BMI Calculator for Children & Teens

Also measure circumferences such as waist, hip, mid-arm, and mid-thigh to track changes as you work toward better fitness. Finally percent body fat, percent lean muscle mass, and visceral fat are also great indicators to track your progress as you make health behavior changes. We can measure these indicators for you in the office.
